NOTRA Rules

In a nutshell, here's how a race meet works. Each dog runs in three heats or "programs" as they are known. Dogs compete only against other dogs of the same breed and a maximum of four dogs run in each race.

Each dog earns points in each race, based on its placement in the race. After the three races are completed the dogs in each breed are awarded placements for the race meet, based on the point total earned during the meet.

The top few finishers in each breed earn points towards an Oval Race Championship (ORC). The number of points earned is determined by the number of dogs in competition for that breed.

A dog that has never run in a race meet is referred to as an FTE (first time entered). After a dog has run in a meet, a special average or "WAVE" (weighted average) is calculated for each dog, based on the point totals earned in prior meets.

Faster dogs earn more points in meets and therefore have higher WAVEs. At the beginning of each meet, dogs are grouped in races according to their WAVEs, so that dogs of equal ability run in the same races.
